Up by the Bootstraps, Inc. Now Serving Students of Douglas County

DSC_0009Up by the Bootstraps, Inc. founders Gwendolyn Parker and Margaret McCarley, their family, friends, and Chamber representatives celebrated the formation of their organization by holding a DC Chamber Ribbon Cutting on April 18th. Up by the Bootstraps is a local nonprofit that provides affordable SAT prep sessions, mentoring and other educational opportunities. They serve students in the Douglas County community.

An underrepresented number of students in Douglas County participate in the SAT test that is administered each year. Up by the Bootstraps recognizes the low number of students taking the SAT test due to an economic disadvantage. To help alleviate this situation, they provide a mentoring program as a way to enhance the SAT Prep Test. Through this program, they encourage youth to look beyond their present situation and hone in on skills to help them become successful in the future. The program costs $200 for a 9-hour session. Each session is taught in a three hour frame 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on a Saturday morning. Sessions include an official SAT Prep Guide and practice tests.

Mayor Pro-Tem, Richard Segal, commented, “we all know that small businesses play a huge role in the community, but nonprofits are the true heart of the community. On behalf of the City of Douglasville, congratulations; we appreciate what your organization provides for students throughout the community.”

Chamber President and CEO, Sara Ray, congratulated Gwendolyn and Margaret, “we are so excited to help celebrate the launch of your new organization, and we look forward to supporting and promoting your endeavors to assist students succeed for many years to come.”
