Habitat for Humanity Celebrates First-Ever Neighborhood for Veterans

DSC_0014Habitat for Humanity President and CEO, David McGinnis, staff, volunteers, and Chamber representatives celebrated the completion of their first house for Veterans by holding a DC Chamber Ribbon Cutting on August 23rd. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps people in the community and around the world build or improve a place they can call home. The neighborhood for Veterans is located off Chicago Avenue in Douglasville.

The first-ever all Veteran Habitat neighborhood in the state, called “Veterans Place,” is located in Douglasville. Plans call for eight homes to be built over four years, with the first two completed in 2018. Veterans Place is located on four acres, which NW Metro Habitat purchased in 2016 from the Douglas County Housing Authority. Local sponsors for the first homes built in Veterans Place include: The Home Depot Foundation, Lockheed Martin, Cato Fashions, St. John Vianney and St. Theresa Catholic Churches, Hamilton State Bank, Stallings Insurance Agency, First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville, the Douglasville-Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority, Brasfield & Gorrie, Gordon Food Service, Genuine Parts Co., Atlanta Custom Fabricators, DeNyse Companies and GreyStone Power.

According to David McGinnis, NW Metro Atlanta Habitat President & CEO, “Out of 1,300 affiliates nationwide, we are one of two affiliates embarking on a military-only neighborhood. We are proud to help offer the strength, stability and self-reliance of homeownership to the American heroes who put their lives on the line for us.” The first house was built for homeowner Lester Roberson, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a warehousemen before being medically discharged.

Chamber President and CEO, Sara Ray, congratulated McGinnis and his team, “we are thrilled to celebrate the community you have created for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country, our Veterans. We look forward to continuing to support and promote Habitat for Humanity for many years to come.”
