1908 Mobile Playground Encourages Fun, Physical Activity

Five Douglas County Schools now have safer, more interactive playspaces thanks to a donation from a Douglas County organization. The Sigma Omega Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated hosted an Impact day  Saturday, May 19 to restore and renew playgrounds in several Douglas County Schools. The initiative is part of the sorority’s effort to revitalize 1,908 playgrounds across the world.

In Douglas County, Sweetwater, Factory Shoals, Eastside, Annette Winn and Burnett Elementary Schools received a mobile playground containing toys and games designed to encourage exercise for healthy living. The donated mobile playground box came filled with balls for various sports games, hula hoops, jump ropes, and chalk.

Sigma Omega Omega member Shekesha Jefferson says the organization is investing in the community’s future:  “We care about the health and well being every child in this community. Every student in our community deserves clean, safe and inviting places to play.”

AKA is a Greek-lettered sorority, the first established by African American college women at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. For the past four years, the Sigma Omega Omega chapter of the sorority has been working to renew, create and refresh playgrounds for students across Douglas County.
