WellStar Health System Welcomes Two New Board Members

WellStar Health System is pleased to announce that Shan Cooper and Frank Ros were named to the WellStar Health System Board of Trustees (BOT) at the August board meeting. Joining Cooper and Ros will be Tom Phillips, a trustee-emeritus who currently serves as the BOT’s finance chair.

Cooper is the vice president and general manager of the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company’s Marietta facility, where she is responsible for nearly 7,400 employees. In addition, she serves as the company’s vice president of business ethics. Cooper currently serves on the WellStar Foundation Board of Trustees.

Ros is the vice president, Hispanic Strategies for The Coca-Cola Company, where he responsible for developing and implementing the strategy for having the company recognized as a leading corporate citizen within the Latino community. Ros and Cooper will each serve three-year terms on the Board.
“The experience that Shan and Frank bring to the WellStar Board is truly remarkable,” said Janie S. Maddox, chair of the WellStar Board of Trustees. “Their success in the corporate world is impressive, but they are equally dedicated to the well-being of our community and that is what makes them both such a great fit for our Board. As the demographics of WellStar’s service area changes, we want to make sure that our Board reflects the community we serve, and we are confident Shan and Frank will be tremendous assets to WellStar.”

Phillips returns to the WellStar Board for a two-year term. Owner of the Tom M. Phillips Company in Jasper, Phillips was appointed to the WellStar BOT in 1999. In addition to chairing the finance committee, Phillips serves on the Cobb County Kennestone Hospital Authority. He was also instrumental in the development of WellStar’s second hospice facility, Tranquility at Kennesaw Mountain.

A graduate of Georgia State University, Phillips has served on numerous boards and received appointments during his distinguished career. He is a board member of the Georgia Oilman’s Association and was appointed by Governor Roy Barnes to the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority as an organizing trustee.

Additionally, Phillips is a mason, Yaarab Shriner and a member of the Noonday Baptist Church. He and his wife Betty are strong supporters of the nursing program at Kennesaw State University and have established a scholarship for that purpose.

“Tom has been instrumental in so many of WellStar’s current projects, such as the replacement WellStar Paulding Hospital and East Cobb Health Park,” said Maddox. “I asked if he would come back to the BOT as a voting member and remain chairman of the finance committee during my term as chair, and he graciously accepted.”

She serves on the Board of Boy Scouts of America Atlanta Area Council, the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Military Affairs Coordinating Committee. With the addition of these three individuals, the WellStar Board of Trustees now has 18 members. Nominees for the WellStar Board of Trustees are considered each year that there is an open position. A Nominating Committee reviews each candidate and selects potential members based on their experience (i.e. finances, strategy, community ties, etc.) and the needs of the Board. Potential members who are selected by the committee and indicate a willingness to serve are then discussed and voted on by the entire Board.
