The Douglas County Chamber will host a Nonprofit Organization Conference presented by the United Way of Greater Atlanta on June 11, 2019. This conference is a regional event that will be held at the Douglasville Conference Center, located at 6700 Church Street in Douglasville. The conference will feature Carrie Barnes from Georgia EMC who will discuss the significance of serving on a nonprofit board and the leadership qualities needed to enhance the mission, goals and engagement of the organization.
Many individuals commit to being a part of an organization’s Board of Directors without fully understanding the commitment or requirements of a board member. In turn, many executive directors and senior staff of nonprofit organizations often struggle with how to harness the power of their board members and fully utilize their skills and expertise. There is a shared responsibility between board members and organizational leadership to ensure that both the board and the agency are highly effective. This conference is designed for both agency leadership and current board members to provide clarity and direction regarding the best way to utilize board members, roles and responsibilities of both the agency and the board, the importance of protecting the organization from risk, managing effective committees, board development and strategic direction.
Carrie Barnes serves as a Community Development Consultant with Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (Georgia EMC). She is responsible for providing community development assistance to communities across Georgia. Carrie is an experienced facilitator who specializes in helping communities prepare to successfully grow their local economy. During the conference, she will focus on the importance of serving on a nonprofit board, understanding duties and developing high performance leadership to enhance an organization’s mission, goals and engagement.
“High performing boards are often the key to success for nonprofit agencies,” commented Melanie Kagan from United Way of Greater Atlanta. “United Way strongly believes that the best way for an organization to successfully improve community conditions is through the effective partnership between organizational leadership and board members. We are thrilled to bring this training opportunity to Douglas County nonprofits and community volunteers.”
Chamber President and CEO, Sara Ray, commented, “So many people simply jump into these roles without knowing what they are getting themselves into and what their commitment actually entails. The Chamber’s goal is to provide an opportunity for all nonprofits in the region to have proper training for their organizations which will in turn benefit our community with top-notch nonprofit services.”
The conference is not the executive of the organization, but also valuable training for Board of Directors. Registration for the conference is $29 for Chamber Members and $39 for Non-Members and includes breakfast, lunch and training. For Chamber member groups of 10 or more, registration is $25.
