DCC Celebrates National Entrepreneurship Week

February 2013

21 million of the 27+ million businesses in the USA have just one employee, the business owner. These entrepreneurs are the ones who take the risks to start a business and deliver the goods and services that the consumers throughout the country enjoy. We need to honor these individuals for making our economy work for each of the consumers in our nation.

Since 86% of the businesses in the USA have fewer than 10 employees Americans need to honor the work of the small business owners who are the backbone of our economy. Also it means that we need to examine the value added by those in our education system who are helping students develop an entrepreneurial mind set and develop the skill sets that allow them to move into the economy as business owners or as entrepreneurs who can help the business owners for whom they work to accomplish their goals.

In elementary schools, middle schools and high schools educators are assisting students to understand that being an entrepreneur is a career choice. Individuals can work in whatever career they choose as an independent entrepreneur or they can work for an organization that exists and is willing to hire them for their talents and skills.

In our Community Colleges and Universities throughout the nation they are working with aspiring entrepreneurs to help them focus their ideas and to gain the skills they need in order to advance their entrepreneurial dream. Many of the Community Colleges and Universities have business or entrepreneurial centers that provide consulting services to assist the early stage entrepreneurs to solve the problems they encounter as they get their entrepreneurial endeavors underway.

“Entrepreneurs make up a significant part of our Chamber membership and certainly drive a significant part of our business community,” said Chamber CEO Kali Boatright. “The Chamber’s Small Business Committee was created to offer training and recognition for our entrepreneur and small business members who we are so proud of.”

The Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education (www.entre-ed.com) encourages students, parents, business people and educators to join together to celebrate one of the foundations of our great nation – Entrepreneurship.

Douglas County is an Entrepreneur Friendly community designated by the state in 2006 under the leadership of the Chamber.
