Chamber Engages Non-Profits in Douglas County at Board Orientation Conference

The Douglas County Chamber, in partnership with Georgia Power and the United Way, hosted the Board Orientation Conference for Non-Profits today at The Centre at Arbor Connection. Representatives from 35 organizations attended the event, drawing non-profit board members and executives from three surrounding counties.

The regional conference featured non-profit guru, Bob Harris, CAE, President of The Nonprofit Center.  Harris discussed the purpose of boards, duties of directors, protecting the organization from risk, effective committees, leadership pipeline, and relevance to members, strategic direction and board meetings. “Today’s Board Orientation Conference brought invaluable tools, insight and resources which will advance the mission and plans of The CarePlace,” stated Frank Smith, Executive Director of The CarePlace. “I am appreciative of the Chamber for thinking forward and bringing this quality training to our community.”

Local non-profits such as GreyStone Power Foundation, Children’s Voice: CASA, Keep Carroll Beautiful, Kiwanis Club, Public Education Trust and the Cultural Arts Council amongst others were present for the training.  Materials and information was designed to fit the needs of large non-profits as well as smaller community organizations, allowing everyone to have adequate information to better their sector. “As the new chair of the S.H.A.R.E House Board of Directors, it was invaluable to attend the Non-Profit Board Orientation sponsored by the Chamber, Georgia Power and United Way. We had thirteen board members and our executive director at the training. The information we received could not have come at a better time as our board continues to develop,” commented Janet Kelley, Chair of S.H.A.R.E House.

“The program today was razor-sharp and focused on exactly the kind of information my Foundation Board needs. I especially appreciate Bob’s discussions related to Board protections, good governance, and creating a strong strategic plan. I can’t wait to share these resources with my Board of Trustees, “commented Kim Leanard, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement for the West Georgia Technical College Foundation.
