North Douglas Elementary School’s 2018-19 Principal Karna Kelly wants the joy of learning and reading to extend into the summer months for students. Principal Kelly is challenging students this summer to beat her in their summer reading. With the assistance of Title 1 Funding, Kelly delivered ten books to each Kindergarten through fourth-grade student. Kelly included an encouraging note with each student’s stack of books. The letter outlines a challenge to beat Ms. Kelly in reading 30 books.
The books are theirs to take home and keep over the summer as part of Ms. Kelly’s Principal’s Reading Challenge. Ms. Kelly wants all students to stay committed to reading by completing at least thirty books by next year.
By creating the summer reading campaign, Ms. Kelly wants to ensure that students not only learn but that they become lifelong learners. “Reading is a cornerstone of academic success. I want North Douglas Students to engage in summer reading and come back to school ready to learn.”
Kelly adds that she is excited to see the reading progress students make next year as they continue trying to beat her in the Reading Challenge.
