Elementary Schools Rock the Reading Bowl

First Place - Holly Springs

1st Place Winners – Holly Springs Elementary School

Fifteen elementary schools competed in the 13th Annual Douglas County Kathy Brock Reading Bowl on Friday evening, February 24, at Douglas County High School. Students answered questions about 10 books that are featured on this year’s Georgia Book Award nominee list. Holly Springs placed 1st, Mt. Carmel 2nd, and Arbor Station 3rd.

Second Place - Mt. Carmel 2

2nd Place – Arbor Station Elementary

Students in Douglas County voted for their favorite book this year. The winner was “The War that Saved My Life” by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. The children’s novel is a moving story of triumph against all odds set during World War II.

This year was a “swan song” of sorts for the Kathy Brock Reading Bowl. Beginning next year, elementary schools in Douglas County will compete in the Tome Society program which features a quiz bowl style competition along with other areas of competition in art and technology themed categories. “The Tome Society offers more students an opportunity to get involved and celebrate reading,” according to Tracy Scaglione, media specialist at Dorsett Shoals Elementary and coordinator of the county reading competition. “Several middle and high schools have already begun competing in this program.”

Third Place - Arbor Station 2

3rd Place – Mt. Carmel Elementary
