13th ANNUAL VETERANS DAY LIGHTED PARADE ACCEPTING ENTRIES

October 2012

The 13th Annual Veterans Day Lighted Parade will step off Sunday night, November 11th, at 7 p.m. from Douglas County High School, and the Public is invited to join the parade or line the streets to salute our military, veterans, and our Nation’s flag.

This year’s parade will be led by members of the Sweetwater and Town and Country Garden Clubs who will be carrying 48 roses in honor and memory of the 48 Douglas County citizens who have been killed in action.  The parade’s color guard will be from the US Navy Sea Cadets Warrior Division.  Bagpipers will lead the opening music, and will be accompanied by veterans bearing US Flags.

A trolley will lead the veterans in the parade, and will contain Pearl Harbor Survivor Leonard Santangelo and the family of fallen Marine LCpl Scott “Boots” Harper.  Military units, JROTC units, and veterans groups are expected to be in the parade.

Individuals and organizations may register to be in the parade by calling 770.920.7593 or e-mailing dctv23@co.douglas.ga.us.  There is no cost to enter the parade; however, all entries must salute our military, veterans, and our Nation’s flag.

All parade participants are encourage to “light” themselves up!  The Douglas County Parade is the only known night lighted Veterans Day Parade in the Nation.  The Douglas County Parade is always held on Veterans Day, November 11th, regardless of the day of week, since November 11th was the date that World War I ended.  The parade does progress along lighted streets.

The parade will be filmed by dctv23 for later broadcast.  Filming will take place on Campbellton Street adjacent to Regions Bank.

The parade begins at Douglas County High School; then proceeds north on Campbellton Street; west on Church Street; and south on Bowden, Woodrow and Campbellton Streets back to the high school.

The parade is organized and presented on behalf of the veterans of Douglas County by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners through its Department of Communications and Community Relations.
